Doctor-Patient Fit: How to Advocate for Yourself After a New Diagnosis

Feb 04, 2025

Getting a new diagnosis can feel like the ground shifting beneath you. Between researching, scheduling appointments, and processing emotions, it’s easy to forget one important thing: Is this doctor the right fit for me?

The right doctor isn’t just about expertise—it’s about whether they listen, respect your concerns, and align with your health goals. Let’s talk about how to assess your provider, ask the right questions, and take control of your care.

Step 1: Assess Your Doctor-Patient Fit

Before and after your appointment, take a moment to reflect:

Know Your Medical Values & Goals – What matters most to you? A holistic approach? A doctor who explains everything in detail? Write it down.

Pay Attention to the Appointment Experience – Did you feel heard? Did the doctor take time to answer your questions, or did they rush through?

Ask Yourself: Does This Doctor Support My Long-Term Health? – Are they open to collaborating on your care? Are they proactive in discussing treatment options?

Trust Your Gut – If something feels off, it’s okay to explore other providers.

Step 2: What to Say When Asked, "Do You Have Any Questions?"

Instead of saying “No, I’m good” (or freezing up), try this simple script to advocate for your needs:

👩‍⚕️ Doctor: Do you have any questions?

🙋‍♀️ You: Yes! I really appreciate you taking the time to walk me through my test results. A few things that are important to me as I navigate this diagnosis:

📌 I’d love to focus more on how my lab work connects to my overall health. (Ask for a specific need to be met.)

📌 It’s also important for me to understand how my lifestyle choices impact my condition. I’d love to discuss things like nutrition, stress, and other proactive steps. (Express a value.)

📌 Does this sound like something we can work on together? (Gauge if they align with your approach.)

This keeps the conversation open and helps you determine if this provider will truly support your health journey.

Step 3: Organize Your Health Journey

When I was newly diagnosed, I felt like I was constantly scrambling—digging through notes, trying to remember past treatments, and searching for lab results.

That’s why I created the Conscious Health Plan—a simple, fillable PDF that keeps everything in one place:

Step 4: Finding Strength in the Process

I remember the day I got my diagnosis. The doctor spoke carefully, the room felt smaller, and suddenly my life had a before and after. I left the office with a stack of pamphlets and more questions than answers.

Like many of you, I turned to Google immediately. The flood of information was overwhelming—so much advice, yet so much contradiction. My friends, as much as they cared, didn’t fully understand what it felt like to face something like this.

Here’s what I wish someone had told me then: You are not alone.

You don’t have to figure everything out overnight. Small, steady steps will help you regain control. Start with:

💙 Finding a “Home Base” – A trusted friend, therapist, or family member who can support you.
💙 Setting Research Boundaries – Choose a few trusted sources and limit how much time you spend researching.
💙 Focusing on the Basics – Good sleep, balanced nutrition, stress management—these small shifts make a difference.

Take a deep breath. Your health, your voice, your choice.

Step 5: Advocate, Reflect, & Move Forward

Your doctor’s response to your questions, their willingness to collaborate, and the way they make you feel matter. If something isn’t working, you have the power to make a change.
